What is cancer?
All living things - ourselves included - are made up of cells. Cells are microscopic packages of living material and we have billions of them. They come in many different types: liver cells, brain cells, blood cells and so on. In the normal adultS, cells only grow and divide slowly and under very tight control to make sure that the number of cells in each tissue stays the same. Cancer begins when one cell changes and starts growing and dividing rapidly and out of control. This one cells divides to give two cells, then four, eight and so on until they form growing mass of cancer cells - called a tumor.

As a soldier, Maj Gen Pannu had witnessed pain, suffering and death during the 1971 Indo-Pak war when he commanded a Brigade in Bangladesh. A retired Cavalry man is in a better position to understand the suffering and pain of a human being when he is shot at and, on most of the occasions dies in pain due to lack of care. Cancer patients in India face the same fate — a slow and a painful death due to lack of care and absence of a scientifically proven cure and lost courage to fight the pain. This scantiness leads to the establishment of GCCI by Maj. Gen R.S. Pannu.He was larger than life with us and continues to live with greater lustre and glory even today.
