Prevention through education and awareness Programs :
Prevention is the key to control the onset of the killer disease, the cancer. As has been proven beyond any doubt, prevention is possible only when correct and adequate awareness about the disease is generated through various channels such as awareness classes, distribution of IEC materials, demonstration classes for women especially on self-examination of breast etc. The main objective of these programs is to educate people about cancer – its causes, symptoms, precautions, and various treatment facilities available. GCCI through its extensive work came to realize that one of the main hurdles in the control of cancer was lack of knowledge about its causes. It has been therefore the attempt of GCCI to conduct as many awareness programs as possible with a view to spreading the awareness to the larger segment of society, especially to the poor people living in slums, resettlement colonies, and remote villages.
GCCI takes special attention to see that new development taking place in the area of cancer reaches the people early and without any time lag.
Conducting Screening camps for identification of symptoms:
According to World Health Organisation, most cases of cancer in India are detected at an advanced stage, when it becomes untreatable. To escape from this malady, GCCI has been regularly conducting a no. of cancer screening camps at which hundreds of people are screened for identification of symptoms of cancer. The focus of such camps is to screen those who have a history of cancer in the family or fall in high-risk group. In such camps modern methods are used to identify the symptoms of cancer.
